Tank Details: 120, 2-30's, 18, 45, 10 and a 90 gallon display tank that Kim set up at the pet store she used to manage.
The Tanks and Fish:
One thirty had Mollies, Wags, Platys, and Swords.
The other was a tank resembling the Backwaters of Southeast Asia.
The 18 gallon had 2 Keyhole Cichlids, 10 Harlequins, a Khuli Loach and an ugly Plec lol!
The 45 gallon was originally set up with 6 Discus and Pearl danios, then was 5 keyholes, 10 Serpae tetras, Leopard Cories and assorted Danios.
The ten gallon was a quarantine, then turned into a nursery, and now has assorted tetras and Cories.
The 120 gallon was an an African Cichlid Community
and had seven Clown Loaches of various sizes, a Syn. Catfish 7", and a 9" Pleco.
Now this tank is an Amazon species tank, we have moved the Africans to the 90 gallon display tank shown further down the page.
The Amazon species tank has many fish which include: Seven large Clown Loaches, the 7" and a 4" featherfin cat, 5 keyholes, 2 Ruby Clown cichlids brilliantly colored, 5 headlight-tail light tetras, 13 rummynose tetras, 15 large neon tetras, 6 black neon tetras, 10 gold neon tetras, 10 rosy barbs, 7 varieties Rainbows, 5 Buenos Aires, 11 blackskirt tetras, 4 cory cats, and 4 penguin tetras. its a heavily stocked brilliant display of colorful, docile fish we are incredibly happy with. The ph runs at 6.5, and nitrates about 10ppms, heavily planted with 110 pounds of bogwood which assists in stable acidic ph quality, deeply natural colored medium polished rock substrate mixed with 80 pounds of laterite for lush plant growth.
The filtration is still two aquaclear 500's with simple filter wool for plant debris entrappment as media, no carbon or other filter media is needed to stabilize this tank as the filters bacteria beds are substansial enough to efficiently sustain the bioload in this tank. We have seven underground airstones sparatically placed within the bogwood for a natural gas bubble effect and additional surface movement to highly oxygenate this tank at lower levels for all inhabitants. tank pics of this species tank are coming soon to compliment this description.
Filtration and substrate:
Two 30's had Bio-wheel 330's and an additional bio-wheel 170 for added filtration since the removal of the UGF's, as well as a 660 powerheads with reverse-flow adaptors. Several airstones, and an underwater garden of plants with different light requirements.
The 18 gallon had UGF at set up, but was soon replaced with Fluval 104 with a spraybar for additional movement. Assorted variety of small size gravels. 3 18" tubes powerglow/bluemoon sorts.
The 45 gallon was a stock Jewel tank with a Jewel internal filtration system with additional powerhead running the CO2 system. Substrate was Quartz which was very nice and would recommend highly as substrate to all.
The 10 gallon has a 330 bio-wheel for overkill of filtration to limit constant tank maintenance and overstocking..
The first pics shown are the 120 gallon, this tank is now the 90 gallon display tank shown so the description of filtration and substrate as well as plants and decor are not current anymore, but we are leaving the description on this page to assist with future set ups for Africans for our members. restoration process. This tank has two Aquaclear 500's, 7 airstones, a 880 powerhead, hawaiian puca substrate, shells, lace rock, clay pots. Java fern and moss as well as different cofolia and sword species being the primary plants due to how well they seem to tolerate the alkaline water chemistry.
If I had to do this 120 over again, although I really like the filtration the 500's provide, I would go with a wet/dry system as my filtration choice vs. the 500's, for the intakes on these huge filters are very small considering their size and must be cleaned every other day to avoid clogging up with bacteria and debris. through experience with these filters we have found that by placing decor such as bogwood and rock around the circumference of the intakes elliminates the clogging problem ten fold. The filters are also very high maintenance when power outages occur. We have a battery back up now for outages that works extremely well and we highly recommend it.
The 90 gallon display tank i created at my old workplace was so much fun! I moved my large African Community to this tank. It has a 30 gallon sump system with a 3100 pump. I installed several airline tubes within the rocks structure to create additonal surface movement to better oxygenate this tank due to its being a tall instead of a wide. It is a custom built tank for this particular spot in the store as well.
This 90 never went through a nitrogen cycle either. i took two chem-pure resin bags home to seed within one of my 500's. After two days, i removed one of my sponges to take in with the chem-pure and left it for an additonal 24 hours, and upon its removal had no elevations or indications of the cycle at all. in fact, the only reading that was present was nitrates of approx. 10 ppms.
This 90 is an African Cichlid display tank, and has 18 fish within it including my 12" pleco. It has 183.7 pounds of lace rock, gets 50% water changes weekly, and once a month overhaul, meaning rocks are removed, bleached, and replaced. Other than that, the tank is a fantastic display and assists in selling the juvenile species that are not of full color yet in our store.
